DO YOU DRESS TO KILL?

“Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh” – Matthew 18:7.

I have had the prompting for some weeks now to put forward this question to everyone and to discuss the topic it addresses, but I have had a lot of heart searching because on few occasions when I had attempted to do so, I had met with rebuffs and I have heard these words many times, “it is none of your business what I wear”. I risk being seen as carnal by some “spiritual” Christians who feel they are not affected by this matter I wish to consider. I wish to speak the truth though blunt I may be. However bitter the truth may be, it is the only medicine that can cure human malady. Evil thrives in society when people ignore it and turn a blind eye. Darkness can only be so thick when no candle is lit. I have found an evil that goes on in society, and yes it is carried on and no one seems to care to speak out against this. I will attempt to light a candle to dispel this darkness, even if so dim it may be, I trust God to magnify these and make it shine out so bright that darkness cannot comprehend it.

In the verse that heads this page, the Bible, the inspired word of God let us know that in this world we shall be tempted and definitely there will be causes of offense as long as we live in this world. These temptations are precursors to sin, and if we fall into temptations, we sin and fall short of the glory of God. It takes a strong battle to overcome temptations and we must firmly resist the devil until he flees from us. However, God makes it clear that the tempter is not free of guilt. In a strong worded rebuke, God pronounces woes unto the tempter, the willing tool Satan used to tempt men and women. We will not forget that the serpent still suffers the woes God pronounced on it for being the willing tool Satan used to tempt Eve in the garden of Eden (Genesis 3:14). This must then be the warning to all who “dress to kill”.

I seem to think that the phrase “dress to kill” is a relatively popular term and it may be likely you have used the term sometime, or you may have heard someone make such remark, or maybe you have “dressed to kill”. It is a term used to describe a kind of dressing which is targeted at attracting or commanding the attention of another individual or members of the public. It is used to describe dressing that is seductive and sexually explicit. In some climes, there are different terminologies that is used to describe this kind of dressing, some of which are “dress effizy”, “dress swag” etc. It is a dressing style that aims at stirring up lust in the mind of the opposite sex. It is a dress worn to show off sensitive parts of one’s body. The purpose of such dressing is to entice and captivate the onlooker, and in a sense “kill” him or her, that is, make him or her unable to handle his emotions and make the wearer appear irresistible. Does it work? Yes it does work, and today’s fashion designers know this very well and that is why so many people all over the world are “dressed to kill”. For the increasing popularity of such dressing, it has come to be adopted as a normal way in many societies today. It goes without saying that many people who may be reading this piece may find it surprising that I make these statements about this mode of dressing, because they have never heard it is the wrong way. There is a conspiracy of silence in this whole affair, and many who hold conservative opinions on this matter choose to keep silence for fear of being branded as old-fashioned or odd. Hence, this singular evil, the mother of many other evils, continues as a norm. It must be time to speak out and save the world from this lethal weapon that wrecks lives, families, and entire nations.

I read a report of a recent survey on the worldwide rape incidence off the internet, and it reveals that the rate of increase in rape incidence in the last ten years is above 20% worldwide. Some worst affected nations having the highest rates of this crime are very developed nations including Sweden, United states of America, Germany and France. High rates are also reported for the Caribbean Islands, South Africa, Lesotho and Ethiopia. Rape is a heinous crime and there can be no excuse that can exonerate the rapist. It remains a crime that the world fights to get rid of by imposing many punitive measures. Indeed it is my prayer that such dastard and wicked acts will be heard of no more. However, the fact remains that rape has a cause; one that most of the activism against it has not taken into consideration or have chosen to ignore.

Improper, indecent, sexually provocative dressing, “dressing to kill” has been the major cause of most rape cases. It would be observed that the countries with the highest rates of rape incidence are also the ones with the greatest decadence in morality, especially as regards dressing. The survey which relies on data collated from the litigations in court and reported incidences, may well under estimate these rates because many cases of rape are not reported, particularly in Africa and Asia. I have cause to fear so much for my country Nigeria where immodest dressing has been copied and adopted from foreign climes as part of the consequences of globalization. While we have chosen to abandon the modest dressing of our noble forbears for scanty, revealing, seductive fashion of so called “developed” nations, we are yet to realize the burden of the crime of rape these countries suffer as a result of immoral dressing. I will be bold to assert that the rate of rape incidence in Nigeria is as high as those in the countries highlighted in the report, the difference may be that not as much litigations or reports are made.

Beyond the issue of rape, can we estimate the rates for consensual pre-marital sex and extra-marital sex in our societies? In my thinking, the numbers should be much higher for each of these immoral and sinful acts than we have for rape. There are no litigation statistics or survey data to give us the rates of incidence of fornication and adultery; perhaps no one can investigate these, but God sees in the dark and knows all about it. Fornication and adultery are equally grievous sins before God as rape is, and a singular cause of these is immoral, sexually provocative dressing. More than all these, shall we ever be able to put a rate to the sin of the mind, lust, consequent upon indecent and immoral dressing? God’s law remains that whoever looks at a woman(or a man) and fancies having sex with her in his mind is already guilty of having done so, even when he has not yet carried out the act physically (Matthew 5:28). Now, how many men walk the streets with lust in their hearts for the scantily clad women or girls on the streets? Only God knows! Will God not hold the seducer to account on the day of Judgment? Certainly He will because He is a just God. Do you dress to kill? Repent today and do right, do not be the seducer, the tool in the hand of Satan to cause sin.

It is pertinent for us to look at the specifics and point out examples of these kinds of dressing, at least for the sake of those who may not know what these are. Sometimes I have wanted to blame the fashion designers for the state of moral decadence, because they are the ones who design these clothes tailored to make calculated impact on the beholder. Though these designers throw away moral restraints in the dresses they make in order to make money, every individual who goes to buy these dresses did so fully aware of their inappropriateness and hence such individual is responsible.

I wish to address this matter to all genders, but since in most cases women are the ones who “dress to kill” the men, I shall dwell more on female dressing examples. Transparent clothe materials, see through shirts and blouses, are examples of immoral, indecent and sexually provocative dresses. Low neckline shirts and blouses exposing the top of the breasts are designed for this purpose. Clothes tailored to expose and display cleavages are no tailors mistakes. Thigh-revealing skirts, mini-skirts, skirts with long slits convey messages to the eyes. Body stockings and skin tight wears expose the body form for a purpose. Lingeries and laces are other forms of dresses designed to kill. Bikinis are quite popular but damning. Pantyhoses are designed for virtual nudity, and your buttocks become the centre of attraction with it. Bum shorts also puts your buttocks on display. There are a lot more I may not have mentioned like, open back, shoulder-less, arm-less blouses and gowns. But may I ask you these; when you wore this low neckline shirt or blouse that showed off your breasts, what were you thinking? When you wore this tight clinging mini-skirt that barely covered your pants, what were you thinking? You wore this leggings or pantyhoses that seemed you wore nothing at all, what was your purpose? If you never knew it, know that you are helping Satan to achieve his mission to steal, kill and destroy the souls of men (John 10:10), and I beg you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, get rid of these ungodly clothing and wear clothes that cover your body appropriately.

Men who dress to show off their macho are also seducers. Unbuttoning the shirt to show off the chest by men is done on purpose. Some other immodest forms of dressing like sagging pants to reveal the buttocks are some ways men “dress to kill”. Wearing knickers in public advertise the legs for a purpose. It is time to turn away from these evil ways and turn back to God in sincere and genuine repentance that your sins may be forgiven and you will receive the power to do good. A sign of your true repentance will be that you get rid of these kinds of clothes by dumping them as trash or burning them. God is not unaware of the evil purpose you have been serving by your immoral dressing, He only waits with mercy and grace to receive you if you will forsake this ungodly, sexually explicit dressing. Come to Jesus Christ for cleansing before it is too late and you perish with the rest of the world.

The Bible outlines for us the appropriate standard of dressing in 1st Corinthians 12:23-24 thus “Those parts we think are not worthy very much are the ones which we treat with greater care; while the parts of the body which do not look very nice are treated with special modesty which the more beautiful parts do not need. God himself has put the body together in such a way as to give greater honour to those parts that need it”. Here in these verses we find that certain parts of our bodies must be treated with special modesty for us to be honourable and in the way that God has established. Our sexual organs are the parts of our bodies which must be modestly covered. We must be careful to know that the parts of our bodies that send out lust inducing signals to those that look at us. A man ought to understand his open chest, buttocks and legs can send lust inducing signals to women. A woman has to realize her breasts, cleavage, thighs, hips, buttocks send lust inducing signals to men if not covered and properly covered. God is particular about this matter, so much that He commanded the Israelites not to build altars with steps in His temple so that clothes worn do not lift up thereby exposing the nakedness of the person climbing it (Exodus 20:26). God will not allow His temple to be defiled and polluted by indecent exposures of the body. Do you know that your body is the temple of the living God? (1 Corinthians 3:16-17, 16:19-20, 2 Corinthians 6:16-17). Do you also know that whatever defiles God’s temple shall be destroyed? Are you not defiling God’s temple which your body is, when “you dress to kill”. I know you feel it is your right to wear whatever you choose and it is nobody’s business but yours, but understand that your rights are limited, if you realize that God created you, then He owns you and you ought to obey His commandments. Dear friend, let us henceforth honour the Lord in our bodies which belong to God (1 Corinthians 6:20). Let us present our bodies a living sacrifice unto God, holy and acceptable to Him (Romans 12:1). I know there will be those who will continue in this evil way despite repeated warnings, but I pray that you will not be one of those. I speak to you daughter of Zion, be careful not to wear the attire of the harlot (Proverbs 7:10). Do not be conformed to this world (Romans 12:2). Do not copy the evil fashion of unbelievers for you are a peculiar people, a holy nation, called out from the world to show forth the praise of Him who called you out of darkness to His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9). Kim Kardashian and a host of other designers like her should not be the makers of your wears. I pray that God will give you the grace to see the truth in this message. It may be your last warning. Save yourself from being the next rape victim and do not be the cause of stumbling to your brothers who aim to keep a clean heart. Jesus Christ says “Whosoever shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his(or her) neck and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea” (Matthew 18:6).

Never forget this, the seducer shall have her fair share of judgment on the day of the Lord, do not be one!
