THE BLESSING OF THE GODLY (2)

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful” – Psalms 1:1.

In the first part of this exposition on the blessing of the godly (Click http://geraldinyang.blogspot.com.ng/2018/02/the-blessing-of-godly-1.html?m=1 to read the first part), we saw the first part of the lessons contained in Psalms chapter 1. We noted vital lessons from verses 1 and 2 of Psalms chapter 1. We noted that God is set to bless the godly, His children. We noted that there are conditions to fulfill if we will have God’s blessing, and that primarily, we must be godly. We saw also the necessity for separation from ungodliness and the ungodly.

Psalms 1:1 makes it clear that we must not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seats of the scornful. We discovered the analogy scripture employs in relating the interaction of the godly with the ungodly; walking, standing and sitting. These postures of the body; walking, standing and sitting are indicative of the levels of compromise with sin and ungodliness.

We become more comfortable with unrighteousness so much so that we not only walk in the counsel of the ungodly, we stand in the way of sinners and eventually sit in the seats of the scornful. It was obvious that the next posture after we have sat, shall be lying down dead as a consequence of compromise with sin. We also discovered the solution Scripture proffers in Psalms 1:2. We must keep in the way of godliness by placing high premium on God’s word and letting it be the overarching and overruling principle of our lives.

We move on now to see the blessedness of staying true to God in all we do as written in Psalms 1 verse 3. Let us receive encouragement by the promise we have here in Psalm 1 verse 3, for it clearly shows that the way of the Lord is the best way. It is the way of gladness. It is not a barren way. It is not a way of sadness but that of joy. There is a motivation for godly living, and in case you never saw it anywhere else, discover it here in Psalms 1 verse 3. “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of waters, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper”, Psalms 1 verse 3. In the beautiful analogy in Psalms 1:3 that compares the life of a Christian with that of a tree planted by the rivers of water, discover a truth Scripture has stated again and again. We see in Isaiah 61:3, that we are the planting of the Lord. This is in agreement with Psalm 1 verse 3. We see again in John 15:1-5, that we are even better, branches in Jesus Christ, our great vine, planted and tended by God.

When we are tended by none other but the Almighty God, the Husbandman, that is the greatest blessing. When God undertakes our success at whatever endeavors of life we are engaged, we indeed can have no problems, that is great blessedness! The Psalmist used the analogy of a tree planted by the rivers of water, but the reality is that we are branches attached to, and taking our supplies directly from the Lord Jesus Christ. Your fruitfulness is guaranteed already in Jesus. Live in that consciousness that all you need is already provided in Jesus and that you shall bring forth your fruit in due season. You will never miss your season of fruitfulness in Jesus Christ name. Amen.

Brothers and sisters, we must know this promise of God and be so assured of it or else Satan, the Devil, will try to sell us some fake “blessing” in exchange for our great heritage. When you know this promise of God, you will understand you do not have to cheat others to succeed or prosper. You will know you do not need to be engaged in any fraudulent means to have fruitfulness. At your office, when brown envelopes of bribes are circulated, choose to stay attached to Jesus, your prosperity far outweighs the weightiest of such envelopes. Rest assured that if you keep following God’s commandments and living to please Him in all you do and keep from doing, He will bless you. You may encounter some difficulties at some times, but keep following God, keep trusting Him who controls the seasons of your life and in due season, your will definitely flourish; for the righteous shall flourish like a Palm tree (Psalm 92:12). Those who are planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God (Psalm 92:13).

We also see in Psalms 1 verses 4 to 6, that in contrast, the ungodly are greatly cursed. As the godly are so tremendously blessed, so are the ungodly cursed as Psalms 1:4-5 reveals. The ungodly will have reversed fortunes, they will not prosper nor be fruitful. They are bound for destruction, for they are like chaff which the wind blows away very quickly. Chaff may appear colourful and look much like the real grain, but the wind always separates the chaff from the real grain. The ungodly are consumed in the winds of problems for they have not God to sustain them, but the righteous will prevail because God upholds them.
Have you been living as the ungodly? Are you living in sin and disobedience to God? Have you not accepted Jesus Christ as the Lord and Saviour of your life? Today is the time to change course and be reconciled to God. You need to pray and surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ today. Confess your sins and repent of them, and make a commitment to follow God and be obedient to Him for the rest of your life. Walk henceforth in the way of godliness and you shall also be blessed.

Let us consecrate ourselves to God and walk in holiness before Him. Let us abide in the Vine, our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us keep reading, studying, meditating and practicing the word of God we have written in the Bible. God is ever ready to bless us abundantly for in John 15:7 that He will grant whatever we ask Him. Finally let us note the concluding words of Psalms 1:6, “For the Lord knows the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish”. The way of eternal life and being with the Lord in Heaven at the end of our sojourn in this world, is to live a godly life. Ungodliness will destroy the ungodly in this world and damn the soul in eternal suffering in hell after this world. Please bow your heart in prayers and talk with God this moment. If you are godly, please keep on being so. If you are ungodly, please repent now before it is too late! May God bless you.
